81 Years of Ringing
It is one of the nicest aspects of ringing that we can celebrate special occasions
with bells, and on Friday 15th February it was a great pleasure for local ringers
to meet Albert Driver at
St Mary’s Church, Redgrave
to ring a quarter peal for his 93rd birthday. Albert has been ringing
since the age of 12, and 81 years later he is teaching a band to ring at the
nearby church at
Rickinghall Superior!
A wonderful set of wooden gates made by Redgrave resident and new recruit to
Albert’s band, Chris Davies, greeted us on this chilly morning and once inside
Albert proudly showed us the work which has been undertaken in the church since
it came under the care of the
Churches
Conservation Trust, including not one but two toilets, new flooring, new
lighting and repairs to the tower steps.
The following quarter peal was rung
in 45 minutes; .

Local new recruit Briony was delighted to ring rounds and call changes, and
we finished with a 60 of Grandsire with Albert on the tenor, after which he
called the bells to fire before lowering them and retiring to the Cross Keys
pub for lunch.
