The 27th Ridgman Trophy 10 bell striking competition was held on Saturday 7th June at St. Peter-ad-Vincula church Coggeshall. Some eight teams had been entered into the contest with the draw being made in the tower some three weeks previous, our band electing for an early position due to seven of the band being committed to the SE district meeting later in the afternoon.
The chief judge was Alan Ainsworth , a well respected ringer and member of St. Paul’s Cathedral band and his son Mark. After a ring they were hidden in the top room of the vestry to judge each of the teams.
The format of the Ridgman is that teams draw a timed slot so are free to come and go to suit the schedules and two other teams used this as they went to ring for weddings at their own towers although some 70 people were in church to hear the judgement.
Place | Band | Marks | Remarks |
---|---|---|---|
1st | Essex Association | 20 | Good controlled ringing |
2nd | Hertford County Association | 36 | A jumbly end otherwise good |
3rd | Ely Diocesan Association | 38 | Lumpy in middle |
4th | Suffolk Guild | 50 | Some rushed leads, getting better |
5th | Lincoln Diocesan Guild | 52 | Brisk but rushed, tenor slow |
6th | Cambridge University Guild of Change Ringers | 65 | Jumbly with 18 double faults |
7th= | Bedfordshire Association | DNF | Fell off the line, miscalled |
7th= | Peterborough Diocesan Guild | DNF | The bobs did for them! |
At the post ringing meeting it was agreed that next years competition which will take place on Sat. 6th June will be held at St. Peter Mancroft Norwich using the light 10 or at Kings Lynn, possibly Stedman caters again. There was some discussion about holding the draw on the day, thankfully common sense prevailed and the present draw system was retained.
